Sakkara is a diverse collection of monuments, pyramids and tombs from a wide swath of dynasties. The Step Pyramid of Djoser, designed by the fabled vizier Imhotep, which is the centerpiece of Sakkara, really began pyramid building in the world. This is raw ancient Egypt! Below I am talking between the Step Pyramid (camera side) and the Pyramid of Unas (to the right), and you can see behind me the pyramids of Dahshur, the Red and the Bent Pyramid. Turn in another direction and you can see the Giza giants! You can also see teammate Will Weyer and I measuring some things inside the Pyramid of Unas, the place which houses most of the famous Pyramid Texts. This is the first break-out of hieroglyphs and written symbols inside a pyramid of the Old Kingdom! All the pyramids of the 4th and 5th Dynasty have.. basically nothing like this. Then the last king of the 5th Dynasty, Unas, fills his pyramid with writing!
Two Sakkara places that always bring out that special Egypt magic here are the invisible-then-visible Orion in the Pyramid of Unas, and the fabled Serapeum, housing the large granite boxes. This will be one of your special days in Egypt!
